Discolored Water-Public Works Notice

Over the past couple of weeks, the City of Richwood has received several reports from all areas of the city of discolored water. Discoloration within the public water supply is caused primarily by high amounts of iron and magnesium in the groundwater. This is naturally occurring. The city of Richwood treats the groundwater with phosphates to sequester such elements. Currently Richwood’s water is coming solely from water wells as Public Works has Brazosport Water Authority’s distribution isolated from the system while performing a major water distribution repair. As we run solely on wells, chances that discoloration in the water supply will increase. Currently Public Works is double checking all well sites to ensure that we have good injection rates of phosphate. Beyond that, Public Works will perform maintenance flushing of fire hydrants in areas from which we are receiving discolored water reports. Richwood’s public water supply is tested daily to ensure TCEQ compliant chlorine residual and samples are submitted on a monthly basis to the county water lab for microbial analysis. All tests are confirming that the water is safe. If residents wish to report discolored water, it’s requested that you do so on Richwood’s Website using the “Report a Concern” option. If residents have any further questions regarding discolored water, please reach out to the Public Works Director’s office at (979) 265-2082, option 5
