The City of Richwood is located near the Gulf Coast in Brazoria County which is part of the Houston-Galveston Area Council of Governments.  The City of Richwood, along with the municipalities of Brazoria, Clute, Freeport, Jones Creek, Lake Jackson, Oyster Creek, Quintana and Surfside, with their related unincorporated areas form a cluster community generally called Brazosport which is located at the mouth of the Brazos River where Stephen F. Austin founded his original Texas colony and where many of his family still lives.
The Battle of Velasco, fought a few miles from the townsite of Richwood in 1832, is considered to be the first blow struck for Texas independence.  Brazoria County played an important role during the war for Texas Independence, both as a seaport and as a center for political activity.  The Brazosport area has a rich historical tradition dating back to prehistoric times and has been involved in aspects of Texas.
